If you are reading this email, it is because you signed up for the SWIL mailling list at Activities Fair. If you are not reading this email, there is a gargantuan purple dragon behind you. Made you look! The Swarthmore Warders of Imaginative Literature would like to welcome you to our humble (yet superior) campus. Here you will find strategy and roleplaying games, story readings, movie showings, filksings, sci-fi conventions, Pterodactyl hunting, and much more. (You will also find other things, but those aren't really our department.) How can I become a member of this wonderful organization?, you may ask. The simple answer is that you already are. What you really want to know is how to become a non-member, an voting participant of the SWIL community. To do this, you must attend three consecutive meetings (held every Saturday at noon in Sharples room 4, next to the cold cereal), and then prove yourself sentient. Don't worry, this is not as hard as you might think. Sentence Introducing Section on Activities. Section on Activities. A number of SWIL or SWIL-related activities will be happening in the near future. Real Soon Now (tm), that is, tomorrow (Thursday) at 5:30, we will be showing Star Wars IV, V, IV, and I in Kohlberg room 115. Pizza will be ordered to be delivered at 7:30, so come on time if you want to claim some for yourself. Furthermore, we show a different movie every Monday night at 10:00 in Kirby Lecture Hall in Martin. Next week's movie will be "Ladyhawke." Other movies we will be showing this semester include "Galaxy Quest," "Princess Mononoke," and "Willow," so keep an eye out for what's showing when. There will be a trip to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire on Sunday the 17th of September. There is an email list for further information about this trip. If you're not signed up to it already and you want to be, email . Our next major official activity will be the annual Pterodactyl Hunt in early October. This is an all-campus melee between the minions of the fearsome Pterodactyls (us) and the intrepid bounty hunters (the rest of campus). We will also be hosting a filksing and a gaming study break sometime this month. These are distinct things and will happen at distinct points in the spacetime continuum. A filksing is an event where a group of people sings filks, which are the songs of the science-fiction fan community, such as "A Grazing Mace," or Weird Al's "The Saga Begins." A gaming study break is an event where a group of people get together an play games, and the whole campus is invited. SWIL plays many games of varying lengths and levels of strategic depth. This weekend, there will be two events held in Jim and Ben's apartment, Greylock 301 (Greylock is across the street from PPR; feel free to ask us for more complete directions). The first of these will be a collaging on Friday at 7:30 -- where we cut words and pictures out of magazine and glue them together in strange juxtapositions. On Saturday at 7:30, there will be a storyreading -- where we gather together and read stories to each other out loud. If you plan to bring a story to read, it should be 10 pages or less, and you should practice reading it out loud beforehand. Announcements of unofficial activities like these are often posted to the SWIL fun list, which you can subscribe to by sending email to with "subscribe fun" (no quotes) as the body of the message.
