SWIL NEWS Volume 6, Number 11 December n<3, 1983 I am sure that you are all starting to get psyched up for finals. Last time, oh so long ago, those present at the meeting were at least Matt, Alison, Shoshanna, Jed, Stefan, Irene, and myself. Jed informs me that my note to Mike Dreyer has incited him to order _Dracula_ for us. I believe that the date I asked for was the closest Sunday to Valentine's Day. I do not know how much the film will cost us, but I hope he will inform us one way or another about that. Most of the news is in the SWIL.NOTICES and assorted files mentioned therein, so without further ado: ********** SWIL NOTICES ************** _________________________________ I. Calendar of events ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For conventions see a separate section. II. Who to Consult for What (complete names in SWILLIST file) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ & soon addresses & extensions, too Re: Money >Jed is treasurer Re: Official SWIL Policy >Neil [Shoshanna & Jed] III. Filk Book ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From now on start and then add to a FILKS3.RNO. If anyone wants to borrow the Microfilk Book or the mimeo filks to copy please contact Neil. If you want a copy of the volumes of the FILK Book you are welcome to spool them off for yourself. These along with index and contents might be especially nice for you at conventions. IV. The SWIL Publication (in olden days _The_Unicorn_Star_) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _The_Unicorn_Star_ is no more! Well, at least the title is no more. We have decided that we need a new title. Please submit suggestions to this space right here in SWIL.NOTICES. So far the only title suggestion is from Alison: "All Creatures Green and Slimy". Shoshanna suggested in jest "16 pages". We also need to get going with the "media blitz". Those who volunteered some responsibility with this are Jed, Shoshanna, Ben Fulves, Irene, and Stefan. V. T-Shirt ~~~~~~~~~~ We need to know just who wants the t-shirt. Please go into the new file named "T. SHIRT" and put your name in there. Also your color preference. Right now about five of us: Matt Wall, Alison, Jed, Page 1 - SWIL NEWS Volume 6, Number 11 December n<3, 1983 Shoshanna, and I like black design on red shirt. We want the SWIL t-shirt. We are Name Color Preference Neil Ottenstein Black Design on Red Shirt Jed Shumsky " Aison Knapp " Matt Wall " Shoshanna Green " Barbara Weene ???? -no pref. but black on red sounds good. Heather Whipple fine with me(black on red, that is--hey!!if the design smudges, we'll have red-shift! HAHAHA) VI. Co-sponsored Movie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We still need to decide just what movie we want to co-sponsor with Movie Committee (or try to do so). Time is running out. Jed has a list of some movies and should put it in the account at some time. Indicate your app~roval and vote. We can call the file MOVIE. Okay. NAO What do you want to see co-sponsored with Movie Committee? The Day the Earth Stood Still Watership Down The Lord of the Rings? Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan($$$?) Et cetera ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Book of the New Sun is now completely in paperback. Also FOUNDATION'S EDGE is in paperback now as is Spider Robinson's excellent book MINDKILLER. There is a book review for SUPERLUMINAL, Vonda N. McIntyre's new book, on the SWIL board. NAO. (There is another New Sun book on its way out, as well. It's not a direct continuation of the first series; I think it takes place after the coming of the New Sun. I don't know when it will be out. but Wolfe promises that it will appear in his afterword to Citadel of the Autarch. SG ) Also out in the stores is _Helleconia_Summer_ (sp.?) by Brian Aldiss which is the sequel to _Helleconia_Spring_ which I have heard was excellent. Cornell library has a subscription to LOCUS, "the newspaper of the science fiction field" and an eight-time Hugo winner for Best Fanzine. I recommend it highly. Lots of publishing info, gossip, convention reports, updates on ongoing sf activities, etc. -SG THE BOOKLIST PROGRAM IS WORKING. The list contains my books and books from a list that Jed made earlier (I managed to erase a short list of Shoshanna's books). It's fun and easy to use--just type "BOOKS" for full instruction. Even if you don't want to enter your whole booklist, try it out and enter a few at a time. --Dave B. Shoshanna says that the Ursula K. LeGuin talk does exist. Ask the Page 3 - SWIL NEWS Volume 6, Number 11 December n<3,1983 person in Special Collection if you want to hear it. It should not take too long for it to be found by that person. For those who like to see a whole bunch of lists McCabe has the book for you. It even has more than just lists. It is _The_Science_Fiction_Reference_Book_ Ref. PN3433.5.533 It has a listen of the fiction category winners and a whole bunch of runners up of the Hugo Awards (1953-1980), the Nebula Awards (1966-1980), World Fantasy Awards (1975-1980), Jupiter Awards (1974-1979), Locus Poll Awards (1971-1980) and more. There is a section of Outstanding SF Books from 1927-1979 giving a few comments on the books mentioned. Also there is a list alphabetical by author of Masterpieces of Fantasy. So, if you ever wondered what there is out there which other people think are good books to read, you know where to look now. NAO Do we need all the files in MONSTER??? Whoever made this subufd, please take care of it. NAO. Thanks to all who crashed at my house during Philcon and did not burn it down, etc. Carol and Duncan enjoyed y'all. Should you wish to express your thanks via notes, gifts, large cash grants, you can write to them at: Carol and Duncan Wall 2111 A Arch St. Philadelphia, Pa. 19103 p. s. i'm kidding about the gifts and large cash grants, but Carol does like to get mail. You're all really swil --Matt Page 4
