There was a good turnout to the last meeting including new voting persons Matt Wall,
Alison Knapp, Irene Ghatt, and also Stephen Christian, Jay Scott, Matt Katinsky, Jed,
Shoshanna, Sherry, Gwen Riles, Ben Fulves, myself, and a cameo role for David Ross.
The next person up for voting pivileges is Matt Katinsky if he arrives next time.
Matt Wall has assumed the title of Psycho-Killer Historian which someone said means
that he wants to go back in time and kill his grandfather. 

We have two candidates for the role of heir apparent. They are Jedi by Night
Shumsky and Our Shoshanna Green. I have thought that a good date for the
election is October 15 even though I do have GREs that day. For one, that is
three meetings from now so all people who do not have voting privileges can
obtain them by or on that third meeting and thus participate in the election.
It also gives everyone a good amount or time to get acquainted with the
candidates. 

So far I have seen one submission for the SWIL t-shirt design. Alison Knapp brought
in a very nice dragon picture. A thought for the slogan was "We have ways of making
you SWIL." Please get any more suggestions for the slogan and designs in during the
next two meetings. We would like to make a decision on the design so that it can be
submitted to SWAPA so more people can order the shirt and thus we can get a better
deal. It would be very good if we could get the shirts back in time for Philcon so
things have to start rolling. 

Talking about Philcon, there are plenty Or details about it on the SWIL board. We
would like a list of people who are interested in getting together Tor renting a room
in the hotel. A list is up on the SWIL board for people to sign. I will try and bring
it to the meeting. The deadline for preregistration ($9 as opposed to $14) is October
31. 

SWAPA collation is Saturday October 15. Send lines to Jim Huang 1887 Beacon St. #3,
Brookline, Ma. 02146. If they arrive about five days before then they can get
cheaper copying. 

Great thanks goes to Sherry, Jay Scott, Dave Bedell, and Dan Levi for stuTring the
all campus mailing even though I did receive about forty copies of it in my mailbox.
For this great act I will continue to send SWIL NEWSes to Dan Levi unless he tells me
that he doesn't want to receive them. Also Todd Karakashian has told me he wants to
receive so that is it for this round of reductions oT the SWILLIST. If you want to

At the meeting many people expressed interest in being on the state of The
Unicorn Star. They were Ben, Stephen, Jed, Shoshanna, and then later on Irene
said so. I leave it among you five to decide who is in charge oT what. I am
sure that you are capable of doing a good Job. 

The Halloween Party will be on the Saturday night. It seems that we cannot get Bond,
but Sherry says we can continue the tradition of having it in Lodges 5 & 6.

ODD ITEMS: Jed's booklist is alive in the SWIL account and he passed it
around at the meeting. He mentions that there is yet another Xanth paperback
on the loose. At Waldens I saw _Gods_of_Riverworld_ by Philip Jose Farmer
which is supposed to take place a few weeks after _The_Magic_Labyrinth_,
_Valentine_Pontiflex_ by Silverberg, and a new novel by Vonda N. McIntyre
based on her story "Aztec ". I have put information from the Philly Inquirer
on the Dune movie on the SWIL board. LACON 2 which is the World Con for 1984
is right now only $40 membership. It will take place from Aug 30 to Sept 3.
So all people who are going to be out that way might take stock and sign up.
As it is, the tentative Swarthmore year calendar starts on September 7 next
year with the Honors Meeting so it presents no conflict. 

I received a phone call from H. Bruce Franklin. He thought that a topic and
title which would draw more people to the talk would be "Nuclear War in
Science Fiction" as opposed to the original topic of "Science Fiction and the
Imagination of America." At this moment unless we tell him otherwise he is
assuming that the new topic is good. He also has told me that he would be
available to eat with people and perhaps have a casual talk with people that
night during dinner. We need to decide at the meeting what we would want to
do and then act upon it. I have a list of his credits which I put together
for the Cooper Foundation proposal. I will make a few copies of it,
distribute them at the meeting and put one up on the SWIL board if I have
time. 

The story of _Dark_Star_: 

The reason why it was not shown on Sunday was because it did not arrive. The
reason why it did not arrive is because the distributor, Swank, did not have
the order of it on record. The reason of this is unknown. This matter caused
numerous headaches and now good future policy in dealing with films has been
revealed to me. Haunt the post office the week before the film is supposed to
arrive in order to make sure that it does arrive. If by the Wednesday or
Thursday before it has not arrived then one should call the distributor and
find out why. This time it would not have mattered as per showing the film
as Swank had lent it out to someone else for the weekend anyway. 

 At this moment Dark Star is rescheduled and ordered with Swank for Sunday
October 16. We are receiving bulliten board posters which should be on the
way even as I type these words. The cost was only $65 plus the handling
charge which. I believe. is what we got it for when it was " ordered" before.
There may be some objections with that date.  The prime objection is that our
speaker, H. Bruce Franklin will be here on the 14th. Thus we are putting our
two major events of the semester on one weekend. (Of course that might not be
considered an objection at all.) This is the earliest date possible for the
film. I myself, object to putting Dark Star off to a later time. As the
semester goes round things do get a bit more hectic. November and December
are short college months. Philcon is in November. We can always have reading
and filksings during those months. There are probably more conflicts later on
in the year which may not even be scheduled yet. We can discuss this whole
matter at the meeting and come to a decision.
