SWIL NEWS Volume 6, Number 9 November n<5, 1983 Last time we had a good turnout and more people are added to the SWILLIST. Those who were present were the Bens Felzer and Fulves, the Scotts Moore, Schwartz, and Jay; Jed, Heather (now with full privileges), Gavin, Alison, Jack, Irene, Vinny Murrell, Ed, Esther, Mana Lohatepanont, Gwen, Ellens Perry and Sasse, Jim Crowell, and myself. I realized that Ellen and Jim were two of those whom I did not know the real names of last time so they are in reality up for full privileges next time. (Hooray for them!!!! says Barbara Weene - consultant on duty) Hello fellow-SWILers...Barbara speaking (typing?). Anyway...I'll be driving into (and out of) Philcon in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for passengers...anybody interested? I've got four (IV) spaces up for grabs, but that may actually be read as three (III) instead... depends on the varying whims of my sister. En tout case, let me know if you're interested in riding with me. Danke. Meanwhile, I called Mike Kane and he said he is definitely going to Philcon. He is willing along with Dave S-G to provide some crash space at Secane for people if they want (i. e. to and from Philcon that far). Think about it. Preregistration exists no more at this date so all further people who want to go will have to pay $14 at the door. Alison, please bring the t-shirt designs so that we can decide what we are going to do. We still need some words on it. We could just have "SWIL" or even add "Swarthmore College" to that. If we also want a saying we have so far had a number of suggestions including "We have ways of making you SWIL", "All's SWIL that ends SWIL", "The SWILmarillion", "I think therefore I SWIL, I SWIL therefore I am" (either half or both of that one), and "In the SWIL of the night". On the topic of sayings, Scott Schwartz mentioned one which you should see somewhere on this page. You know who to blame. I heard that the Halloween Party was a real success. Thanks a lot Sherry. Jed is arranging to talk to the Oktoberfest treasurer to see if we can get money to pay more of you back and get the pizza to the winning group. I think that the time is approaching for those who want to manage _The_Unicorn_Star_ to start something. The "Media blitz" as Stefan phrased it should begin. We can request to have some kind of notice be put into the Weekly News from now until whenever. People start thinking of something that might draw in people. And now it's time for SWIL.NOTICES: ********** SWIL NOTICES ************** _________________________________ I. Filk Book ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From now on start and then add to a FILKS3.RNO. If anyone wants to borrow the Microfilk Book or the mimeo filks to copy please contact Neil. If you want a copy of the volumes of the FILK Book you are welcome to spool them off for yourself. These along with index and contents might be especially nice for you at conventions. IMPORTANT NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mary Stewart has a NEW BOOK! It's The Wicked Day. and is all about Mordred. Anyone with $15 to spare please buy the book IMMEDIATELY and lend it to me please. Not-So-Important News: I am now receiving my F&SF magazine subscription and I expect Analog any day, if anyone would like to borrow either just ask. -AK The Book of the New Sun is now completely in paperback. Also FOUNDATION'S EDGE is in paperback now as is Spider Robinson's excellent book MINDKILLER. There is a book review for SUPERLUMINAL, Vonda N. McIntyre's new book, on the SWIL board. NAO. (There is another New Sun book on its way out, as well. It's not a direct continuation oP the first series; I think it takes place after the coming of the New Sun. I don't know when it will be out, but Wolfe promises that it will appear in his afterword to Citadel of the Autarch. SG) THE BOOKLIST PROGRAM IS WORKING. The list contains my books and books from a list that Jed made earlier (I managed to erase a short list of Shoshanna's books). It's fun and easy to use--just type "BOOKS" for full instruction. Even if you don't want to enter your whole booklist, try it out and enter a few at a time. --Dave B. ********************************************************************** May the Torque Be With You Page 2
