Swilnews #2, Vol.II "Because anything else would be ... something else" Greetings, all. "So much time and so little to do. Wait. Scratch that; reverse it." And here we go again. There's just so much news -- if it were catnip, it'd be a bushel. So here goes. We may throw in some idle frivolity toward the end, but business is business and news is news and platitudes are platitudes and (we're running out of breath) here comes the news and business with possible platitudes to follow ... News The Renaissance Fair -- Swil will me mounting an expedition to the Mount Hope Renaissance Fair, just outside of Lancaster, next Saturday, Sept. 23. The student council van and various and sundry cars that will be going will leave from the Rose Garden at 9 am. The expedition will return around 7 pm. The cost will be 10 dollars (8 if you go in costume) plus some for the van or gas. A Renaissance Fair is (in case you're curious) a place where a group of actors assembles to recreate the people and style of Elizabethan England in a fun way. At the fair there will be jugglers, wandering minstrels, nobility (including the Queen Herself), panhandlers, and a comedy by Mister William Shakespeare (who will probably also make an appearance). It's great fun, and there are also a lot of neat shops where you can buy many sorts of medievalish crafts and clothing. For more info and a more complete description, talk to Alex Weirich. Pterodactyl Hunt -- It's coming soon! Josh Smith (Former Lord of the High Step [pe]s) is in charge and will have more info soon. If you want to be a monster or have rules suggestions, talk to him. A Brief Pause for a Commercial Advertisement from Bruce Hahne. WANTED: several people to play one or more occasional games of Teenagers from Outer Space (TFOS), a very silly role-playing game where nobody ever dies, your primary goal is to go on a date with that cute alien in your social studies class, and your secondary goal is to cause as much property damage as possible. Rules (guidelines actually) available for skimming at the upcoming Swil meeting or from Bruce Hahne. All sessions come supplied with food, beverages, comic books, and appropriate background music. No regular commitment required; join th fun once, twice, or more times as desired, or assist the gamemaster by being a supporting cast member for an evening. 1st session tentatively scheduled for the week-end of Sept. 22-3. "TFOS: High school the way you WISH they used to make it." [Ed. note about this advertisement -- If anyone ever has an announcement like this that he/she/thon would like to appear in Swilnews, just send it to Chris Cobb or Laura Almasy (or Laura Almasy or Chris Cobb) through College Mail or send it to us E-mail (CJC90 or LAA90) and we'll post it. Also, people are always looking for a good role-playing game. If you want to run one, you'll have players. It could be swell. Think about it.] Back to the news FILKSING (Neat!) -- There will be a filksing, organized by Jeff Hildebrand (Huzzah, Huzzah) on Sept. 30 from 8-12 pm in Bond. A filksing is a fannish sort of event, where a group of people gather together to sing songs about SF & Fantasy (and other things). Musical aptitude is not required (in fact, tone deafness can be an advantage). I can't describe it accurately -- you just have to be there to experience it. For more info talk to Jeff. Philcon -- The Philadelphia Science Fiction Convention will be Nov. 17-19. Swil will be taking the SC van. Registration information is posted on the Swil board and will be at the next Swil meeting. Register early and save! SF Discussion Group -- There will be a brief meeting to organize the SF Discussion table for the semester. Anyone interested should hang around after the meeting, or if that isn't possible, talk to Chris Cobb before the end of the meeting. END OF NEWS -- "And now for something almost, but not completely, different" (how's that for a mixed reference?) otherwise known as ATTENDANCE. Phran, Josh "the pancakes haven't improved one little bit" Mackay-Smith, Sally "who has chocolate chip-banana-oatmeal cookies in her room" Carter, Joel the moderately stiff, Peter "feeling underspecified" Wagner, Garth "not clashing at all, really quite color-coordinated" Snyder, Nao "owwww" Parkhurst, Dave "hot babe" Auer, Bruce "anyone for TFOS?"
