DARK SWIL - A SWILNEWS ON A LOW BUDGET SEPTEMBER 27, 1991 IMPORTANT MAILING LIST INFO: We are approaching the point where we're going to cut down our mailing list. If you are a freshling who hasn't been to a meeting yet you will be dropped from the mailing list unless you show up to the meeting this Saturday (9/28) or next Saturday, or unless you ask me (Jeff Hildebrand, for those uncertain of who is writing these silly things) to keep you on the list. Everyone who gets paper mail SWILnewses is reminded that switching to e-mail saves paper and makes things easier for me. To switch, send e-mail to jhildeb1. Ren Faire trip is this Sunday. If you are uncertain about transportation details show up at the meeting or talk to Josh Smith. Next Friday, October 4th the Pterodactyls will descend on Parrish and vicinity. We still need a few orc and hobgoblins. If you've volunteered to be a monster, make sure you know where you're supposed to be (and when). If you don't know talk to Stephen Sample. (Also any other general questions about the hunt go to him.) If we get rained out (it will have to be heavy rain to postpone it, but it could happen) then the rain date is Saturday the 12th. SWIL the 13th: Reunion Part II is rapidly approaching. We have a design for the reunion t-shirt (posted on the SWIL board in Parrish.) The "official" colors for the shirt will be black ink on red or royal blue shirts, but there will be pre-orders which will allow you to get a different color shirt. There is a sign-up sheet also on the SWIL board (and it will be at the meeting tomorrow). There will also be reprints done of old t-shirts so for all those who have arrived since the last round of reprints was done, this is your chance to get a copy of all those great SWIL shirts you've seen around. An addition to something mentioned last week. The fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation will indeed start this Saturday at 7pm on channel 29. It is the finale of an all-day Star Trek marathon to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ST. Review: _Synners_ by Pat Cadigan. (reviewed by Jeff Hildebrand) This book is clearly a product of the Cyberpunk movement of the '80s. (Although it didn't see print until this year.) Cadigan has created a near future Los Angeles run by large corporations on the top, but with a seamy underground of computer hackers, musicians, and other disreputable people. (So to speak.) It's a fairly standard set-up but Cadigan manages to throw several twists in to keep it interesting. However when the book finally gets around to the main plot about a computer super-virus it seems to falter. Overall it's strongly recommended for setting, tolerated for plot. Late in the last meeting Annie Fox made the mistake of showing up for her third meeting in a row and so was officially dismembered.
