From jmrobins @ condor.sccs.swarthmore.edu Mon Sep 9 15:14:50 1996 Date: Thu, 5 Sep 1996 18:18:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Snibor Eoj To: _swat.org.swil @ swarthmore.edu Subject: Testing, Testing, 1 2 3 4, or SWILnews #0 Summer break has ended, and we have all returned to Swarthmore. Or most of us have returned to Swarthmore. As of the date and time of SWILmeeting #0, however, only one of us, your loyal co-presidents, had returned to Swarthmore, and so, feeling that it was his civic duty, Liberte seized power. He was allowed to continue in this delusion until the return of Egalite and Fraternite, at which point he was severely pummeled about the head and shoulders until he relented and graciously allowed them to resume their places at his side. And what a long, strange summer it's been. So much has happened, and we have so little space to describe it all. Words fail us when we try to discuss the terrible blimp tragedy that has deprived us of two national monuments, the Great American Rain Forests, and a poodle named Fluffy. We cannot begin to comprehend the meaning of the strange pavement circles that have appeared in major cities all across Wyoming. And terror strikes us dumb when we ponder the fact that our own Sam Weiler has ascended to demigod-hood at CMU, and we don't mean by beating Nethack. In fact, we don't want to think about these things at all, so we're not going to. Instead, we're going to look ahead to the future, a future that will be clearly spelled out in the SWILbusiness: You might think that there wouldn't be much to cover at our 0th meeting, but you'd be in for a surprise. Bonus points for everyone who can read all the SWILbusiness in one breath. We once again have a new Minister of Propaganda, Erik Rosolowsky. Considering that he is also retaining his position as Minister of Weaponry and General Havoc, this could lead to some entertaining new methods of drawing people to SWIL events. Once again, it's time to stuff the freshmen. Their mailboxes, that is. The new MiniProp and your loyal (usurping) co-president, Liberte, will be undertaking this at 2:30 on Tuesday the 3rd. Any unexpected aid will be unexpected, but welcome. (Oops... Too late.) We are creating SWIL tradition by doing something a second time! Our annual, traditional showing of the Star Wars trilogy will begin at 7:00 in Kirby Lecture Hall on Thursday the 4th. Keep your eyes open for exciting propaganda from our new MiniProp. Monday night movies will begin again on Monday the 9th; we have Kirby reserved for every Monday except one this semester. Our first film will be Twelve Monkeys, which we expect to draw quite an audience. Show up early to get good seats, or you may end up on the floor in the aisle (which, of course, some of us consider to be good seats.) Expect fantastic propaganda from our new MiniProp. The Activities Fair will be taking place this coming Saturday from 11:30 to about 1:30. We will, as always, be putting on Live Chess for the entertainment of the frosh. Due to the early time of the Activities Fair, this will be taking place at 1:00, rather than our traditional 2:30 time. There has already been some spectacular propaganda from our new MiniProp. You may have noticed that this time conflicts with our regularly scheduled meeting. We have a few possibilities, and, of course, any suggestions are welcome. One possibility is to hold our meeting at the Activities Fair. While this would have the benefit of scaring away all the other organizations, it would, unfortunately, also scare away the frosh we're trying to snare, (especially with people like our new MiniProp there...) and so it would be a bad idea. Another idea was to just not have a meeting, but there are things rapidly approaching which should be discussed. A third (and possibly preferable) alternative has arisen: Andrea has volunteered to man (woman?) the SWIL table for a little while so that we could go inside and have a short meeting at our regular time and place. An official decision will be made Real Soon Now(tm). On a happy note, we have been informed that a George key will be in our hands within a week. If this holds true, there will be much rejoicing. For now, we shall just sit and wait. There will be no propaganda regarding this from our new MiniProp. Due to shrinking space availability, a reservation has already been made for SWILoween, on the night of Saturday, Nov. 2, in Bond. If people have serious problems with this, let us know, and we'll see if we can change it. Our new MiniProp has also volunteered his room as an alternative site. The Pterodactyl Hunt will be taking place within a week or two before or after SWILoween. Now is the time to decide if you want to be a Wizard. Think about it, and let us know at the next meeting if you're interested. Meanwhile, there are probably some great ideas for propaganda brewing in the head of our new MiniProp. RenFaire is currently happening, and will continue to be currently happening until the weekend of October 12 (we think). We don't yet have anyone to organize an expedition, so if you're interested, let us know. We might even be able to get a van if we act quickly (which could be driven by our new MiniProp). Much has happened regarding SwilCon. Too much to describe here. For details, see Will and Andrea, the ConMasters. Don't bother asking the new MiniProp; he's not involved in that. OK... take another deep breath, hold it, and wade into the... Non-SWILbusiness: At long last, ethernet has made it to Swat. For information, see http://www.swarthmore.edu/ethernet. If you sign up soon, you might actually have an Ethernet connection by the time you graduate. Our new MiniProp does not yet have an Ethernet connection. It is definitely not the case that we are planning to build nuclear weaponry. Really. We mean that. We don't even know how, and our new MiniProp certainly doesn't have access to large quantities of radioactive substances. Joel has suggested a fun game of Kickball in the Crum. He even has a ball that'll float. If you're interested, talk to him, and tell him that the password is "new MiniProp." And finally, the ever popular gaming news. There will be (was) gaming in ML on Saturday August 31st, and will probably be more next (this) weekend. Word on the street is that Sam Weiler and Josh Smith will both be in the area, so doing something fun and exciting would be... well, fun and exciting. This probably won't be organized by our new MiniProp, though, so we'll have to arrange details ourselves at some point in the near future. ATTENDANCE (8/31): e. ~355/113 (JTD) Sarah "Bad monkey!
