From chaos at cs.swarthmore.edu Sat Jul 17 20:05:42 1999 Date: Fri, 20 Nov 1998 09:36:34 -0500 (EST) From: Chaos Golubitsky To: _swat.org.swil at cc Subject: Good News, Bad News, and SWILNews #9 The good news: SWILNews #9 has arrived. The bad news: not only is it three days late, it doesn't even have a humorous subplot. The even worse news: you have to read it anyway; it's about movies. Meeting, the short version: SWILBusiness: 1) filler 2) more filler 3) still more filler 4) SWILCon '99 - yes Non-SWILBusiness: see 1), 2), and 3). P.S. We're voting on movies next week. Meeting, the version copied from Skogul's notes: There were about 400 less of us at this week's meeting than last. (For nontrivial, but still fairly small, values of 400.) Chaos can think up insults on the fly. (For various reasons dealing with academic stress, the course catalog, and evil seminars of doom, Chaos is not going to think up any insults right now. Believe me, she's tempted, though. -H) A vote was called, and we decided in favour of the doors trying to kill us. Or rather, we decided in favour of the proposition that the doors actually were trying to kill us, not that they should. I think. SWILBusiness: 1) We will be nominating and voting on movies next week (also known as "tomorrow"). There have been several e-mail nominations so far. Nominations can be sent to Hlokk anytime before 11:32am tomorrow morning, or you can nominate movies at the meeting. Due to the fact that movie voting takes longer than copying java from a mac onto a non-networked linux laptop using 16 pc disks (not that i have any basis for comparison, mind you), meeting will start promptly at noon, or whenever it is that meeting is supposed to start. 2) Presidential nominations will be 5 December, and elections will be 12 December. 2a) Most of the Amys in SWIL did not volunteer to be treasurer next year. However, one of them did. Yay, Amy! 2b) We are not degenerate sickos. Lindsay is a degenerate sicko. (Don't even ask which Lindsay.) 3) There's been a little bit of interest in reviving the 24-hour Tolkien reading, or something similar, during reading day this year. Maybe someone should organize it. 3a) Megan will die on 21 December. (No, not that Megan, the other... dammit.) 3b) This week's movie was "Wizards". This has nothing to do with multiple people having the same name, but it was pretty bad anyway. The leadership of SWIL would like to apologize. (Or, at least, i'd like to apologize. For all i know this is part of some evil MST3K spinoff plot Goll and Skogul have to take over SWIL. But i digress. Anyway, it was bad. -H) 4) SWILCon: Skogul was participating in the discussion, so he didn't take notes,* and i was moderating, so i didn't pay attention. The gist of it was that SWILCon '99 will be taking place on 26 and 27 March, and will be a smaller-scale con held in Trotter. * In the interest of accurately documenting my sources, i should say that Skogul did take notes. They say: "Will spoke - is he alive - he didn't say. ouch. so either he's dead or an associate of the devil (or mafia -H) kyla will study me as a scottish witch Non-SWILBusiness: red splotchy things Babylon 5 has two more episodes, one of which happened Wednesday night. It will be showed again Monday in Greylock 301 at 7:30. There was a new episode of Buffy this week, and there will be another one next week. Dave: "Buffy watches B5." Megan: "No she doesn't. She doesn't watch TV, except for that goofy channel with the water buffalo." There will be a party to watch the final episode of B5 in Kohlberg the Sunday of Thanksgiving break. Watch the fun list for updates on the time of the showing - i think it's around 10 right now. "Apocolypse Now" was shown Tuesday and Thursday of this week. If you missed it, you're not allowed to make the "apocolypse later" joke. I think it violates international human decency standards. My seminar is evil. (That's not in the notes; i just thought i'd share.) anyone want to buy a duck? list - 14 November: Megan "does it quack?" Hallam Kyla "of course it's chocolate - oh, wait, a _duck_?"
