From aem @ sccs Tue Sep 12 17:04:21 2000 Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 17:44:54 -0500 (EST) From: Amy' Marinello To: _swat.org.swil @ swarthmore.edu Subject: I have a bad feeling about this... (SWILNews: Episode 1) A short time ago, In a galaxy exactly right here... S W I L N E W S With Y2K threatening the fate of the entire earth, our heroes, Cloak and Dagger, knew they had to act quickly. Finding themselves in the glorified suburbs of Los Angeles, near the heart (or spleen -b) of the computer industry, they were able to avert the millennium glitch in one fell swoop. "Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!" yelled Cloak. "Why don't we just put this plug thingie back into the slotted bit?" queried Dagger, our faithful engineer. And lo, there was light. Unbeknownst to them but beknownst to us (cuz it *were* us! -q), the power surge (ooh! Power! -a) opened a spatio-temporal gateway to a slightly askew universe, delivering three random strangers unto the remote outpost of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Wandering onto the college campus, they were almost immediately mobbed by a rioting horde... er, intelligent colloquium, of SWILfolk who mysteriously knew all their past (and future! -a) exploits, having done extensive research the previous May. Lacking in leadership whilst their brave copresidents were mucking about in California with the singing and dancing horde of local alums, these SWILlies promptly elected the three newcomers as their leaders. Cloak and Dagger returned from their triumphant voyage in the Bad-Ass Minivan of Doom to find their power usurped. Knowing a good thing when they saw it, they promptly relinquished all titles and responsibilities. ...Leaving the strangers in total control. (I have a bad feeling about this... -b) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-* SWILBusiness Random Executive Decree #1: At the request of Thomas Hunter, the planet Earth shall be made icosohedral (20-sided -q) in shape. We handed out picks and shovels after meeting. Abi-Wan read out the movie list for the spring semester, as follows: 1/17 The Mouse That Roared 1/24 Akira Kurosawa's Dreams 1/31 The Crow 2/7 Nausicaa 2/14 The Manchurian Candidate 2/21 The Wizard of Speed and Time 2/28 Plan 9 From Outer Space 3/6 (Spring Break) 3/13 Blade Runner 3/20 Miracle Mile 3/27 Highlander 4/3 They Were Eleven 4/10 Fahrenheit 451 4/17 The Iron Giant 4/24 Nosferatu 5/1 (First day of Schlock) 5/8 The Secret of N.I.M.H. Think about what you want to be in the Valentine's Day Massacre; a signup sheet will be passed around at next week's meeting. We need two waitrons (even more fun than being treasurer! -a), about six thugtrons, and somewhere around ten victrons. We passed around a signup sheet for the Committee to Replace Amy (aka the Speaker Committee). Kyla, JimMosk, Franzi, Kyra, Ben, and Abby signed up, and Lindsay has agreed to help with obtaining funding. Research is underway. Submit to BEM. We want to try to send BEM to a real publisher this year, so a deadline has been set for mid-February. Stories should not exceed 8 pages. Drawings are also wanted, preferably in pen and ink, but submit anything you have! Start thinking of t-shirt designs and/or slogans, and give them to Franzi. Voting on t-shirt designs will take place shortly after Spring Break. SWIL will be hosting an all-campus gaming study break next Sunday, January 30, at 2:00 in Parrish Parlours. Bring games and friends. If you're good, there may even be food for you. We took an Unnecessary SWIL Vote on whether or not to look into having a Dactyl Hunt this spring. Due to the overwhelming victory of "indifference", we aren't. Chaos and food will be running Walpurgisnacht, as chaos hasn't run an event with food for a long time. Both Sharples III and the WRC are being looked into as possible locations. The date has been set as Saturday the 29th of April. Hollis used a future perfect. If you want to be on the SWIL web page or want to make suggestions, email Hollis and BDan at webmaster @ swil.org . *-*-*-*-*-*-*-* NonSWILBusiness By popular vote, there will be a story-reading Friday night at 7:30 in Greylock 301. Next Saturday, JimMosk will be showing "The Way Things Go", something else, and some Czech animated thing. Go watch. Really. Gaming happened in Greylock on Saturday, followed by the First Annual Death Name Game in ML. Much fun and death were had by all, especially the spectators (woohoo! -q). Andrea is moving to California on February 5 and has much stuff both to pack and give away. Go help with both, because we like Andrea! BUFFY: Kira's overindulgent mother gave her a big-ass TV for Christmas. She is now hosting Buffy and Angel in ML 4205 from 8-10 Tuesdays. (Due to a Wednesday seminar, she regrets that guests must leave promptly after the viewing.) MORE BUFFY: Megan, being an awesome friend, has given Kyla a complete set of Buffy tapes. A marathon is in order. NOT BUFFY: Lindsay will be showing "Rapid Fire" (i.e., Brandon Lee with no shirt) on Monday, Jan. 31 in Kohlberg 115 at 8:00, before that week's SWIL movie, "The Crow", in honor of Brandon Lee's (February 1st) birthday.
