Hello, prospective SWILfolk of the class of 2005! You are getting this email because you expressed interest in SWIL at the activities fair. We, the fearless and loyal co-presidents, wanted to tell you a little about ourselves and our organization *before* you arrive in the fall, if indeed you do. I. What is SWIL and how do I become a member? SWIL, the Swarthmore Warders of Imaginative Literature, (yes, the acronym came first) is Swat's science fiction/fantasy club. We also specialize in general weirdness and having a lot of fun. The current co-presidents are Abigail Friedman, aka Heart of Stone Robert McFarland, aka Heart of Darkness Amy' Marinello, aka Heart of Gold As for membership, well, you already are a member. The question you should be asking is "How do I become a non-member?" SWIL works a bit backwards. Meetings are called to disorder at the beginning and order at the end. Only non-members are allowed to vote. To be "dismembered" and become a voting non-member, you must first attend three consecutive meetings and then prove your sentience. This is not as hard as it sounds. Two teddybears, a doll, Lego people, and Callicles the Moose have all been proven sentient in previous meetings. II. Official SWIL activities Our activities are far too numerous to fully list here. However, we will describe some of our most significant activities for you below. MOVIES are shown every Monday night at 10:00 (ish. SWILlies aren't known for their promptness) in Kirby Lecture Hall in Martin. Additionally, we also show the Star Wars trilogy in a single marathon early in the fall. SWILOWEEN is just what it sounds like: SWIL's Halloween party. Costumes, gaming, food, and much fun. THE PTERODACTYL HUNT is SWIL's annual live role-playing game. Just picture lots of Swatties with rolled up newspapers running all over the campus and swatting other Swatties. Nice image, no? THE ANNUAL root beer KEG PARTY will hopefully be returning for a third year next spring. Come be a part of a tradition in the making! We also maintain the Cordwainer Bird science fiction LIBRARY for the college. III. Unofficial activities in which SWIL people engage Story reading, gaming, parlour gaming, filk singing, round singing, gaming, beating "snakes" with sticks, gaming, taking our phones to dinner... you get the idea. If you don't get the idea of our official and unofficial operations or why you might want to come to Swarthmore and join SWIL, feel free to check out our web page at: http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/org/swil/swil.html or email all of us at presidents @ swil(dot.org) or any one of us at abigail @ sccs robertnm @ sccs aem @ sccs We hope to see many of you in the fall! And remember: The other Shaltanac's joopleberry bush is always a slightly mauver shade of pinky russet. *** Gold, Stone, and Darkness ***
