SWIL NEWS Volume 6 Number 14 January 27, 1984 Hello folks! Kaor! Welcome to the first SWILNEWS of 1984. In attendance at last week's meeting were The President (no, Big Brother is not a suitable title), Jay Scott, Dave Bedell, Jack Sutherland, Ben Felzer, Neil (sans raisins!), Irene Ghatt, Esther Oey, Alison Knapp, Heather Whipple, Ellen Sasse, Matt Wall (physically...), and Sherry Hartenstein. This constitutes a minyan by the SWIL bylaws (Bylaws? We have Bylaws? -S. Wait til you see the amazing archives. -J. That's right, when do we get a hold of them? -S As soon as we catch Neil asleep... -J.), and therefore business was indeed accomplished. First, meetings have been officially moved to SUNDAY at high noon in a Sharples reserved room for the next three weeks. If it will cause huge amounts of inconvenience, please let us know. February 4, Saturday night 9:30 in Lodge 6 there will be a Filksing! 'What's a filksing?' I hear you cry. It's a little get-together in Lodge 6, but that's not important now. What is important is that there will be the OFFICIAL PASSING OF THE SWIL ARCHIVES from the old Ghod Emperor (yes Neil, you must give them up) to us, the new regime (still without a title). It will be a blast (non-nuclear, I hope) and we hope to see all of you there (or at least some choice portions...) If anyone in SWIL wants access to the SWIL computer account, please see one of us about it. If not, then don't. Our movie for this semester is the original Dracula with Bela Legosi and will be shown sometime in February. We have missed our chance to cosponser movies with Movie Committee for this semester, but we should still think about them for next semester. On the subject of movies, we noticed that Tarbles is showing seven movies that have been shown here in the past three years. This is strictly against our beloved Budget Committee's policy and it was decided that this would be brought to their attention. SWIL has had several movies denied because of this rule. Vengeance shall be ours! We will write letters to potential speakers to propose to Cooper Foundation. Our time is running out... Speaking of which, we are taking orders for the SWIL T-shirt. The design should be up on the SWIL Board. Also in the time is running out category, we still need lots of submissions too. We've got a great cover idea of photographing a Frisbee over Clothier with a caption about a UFO sighting (We're not giving up this magazine without a fight!). Miscellaneous stuff: Did you know that you can suggest books to McCabe for their collection? Ask a librarian for details. If you are at a convention or cheap bookstore in the near future, please consider buying a very inexpensive. second-hand book to donate to the Cordwainer Bird Memorial Library in Cornell. This is the only way that the SF library can obtain books (legally. that is -S). Alison says that the original Flash Gordon serials are being shown on Saturday nights at 7:30 on channel 23 -check it out. What does everyone think of the idea of renting the SC van to go en masse to see a movie somewhere? See you on Sunday, Jed & Shoshanna
