~SWILnews Volume 7, Number 12 Janua1"1J n<26, 1985 -/ Welcome back, everlJone, and comgratulations on surviving 1984! (Any of you who didn't, ignore that note.) At the first SWILmeeting of the new year were lots of people, but -since I (Shoshanna) didn't bring a SWILlist full attendance was not "taken. Members pre-sent were Sarah Heimann, Alex Porter, Jon Rapkin from Drex~l, Tom Galloway from UPenn and his friend Carol Springs. Non-membe1"s present were noisy. Big news! Debby Bachrach is friends with Jane Yolen, an award-winning sf author and teacher of children's literature, who will be speaking in Phillie in March. -Would we be interested in trying "to bring her out to Swat to speak? Yes! (No gru~bling in the back! there.) Seriously, Debby assures us she is a good -speaker and since she will be in the area she should come in within our (micro-)budget. Cordwainer Bird Memorial Science Fiction LibrarlJ (second floor in Cornell) ha's at least one of her book-s, so use can read up on .her. If .\anyone has a book of hers that they would be willing to lend out plea-se put a note up on the SWILboard to that effect. Speaking of Cordwainer Bird.. .Cornell kindllJ gave us $2:5, with which our thrifty Weyrman bought, count 'em, NINETY-THREE -sf book-s. Check it out. We must decide soon on a second movie Tor -spring semester. There's a lot of Tavor for a truly bad flick. If there is a movie ~ou'd like to see, ask me (still Shoshanna) Tor the catalogues to look up its price, and bring proposals to the next meeting. Al-so on the -subJect of movies, Tom Galloway informs us that some Thursda~ evening soon UPenn will be shousing a double feature of "A Boy and His Dog", based on the award-winning story by Harlan Ellison, and "The Atomic CaTe". The-IJ usill start at 8: 00 pm. Swat usill also .be shousing "Atomic , Cafe" at SfJme point. Tom will get the date of the flicks to me soon Julie -proposed the following terrific idea. "You know ho!ll lots oT halls have Sec1"et Santas at Christmas! or Secret Sweethearts for Valentine'-s Da~'? Well, why don't we all pick someoneis name out oT a hat and pla-IJ' tricks on them Tor April Fools?" Amidst resounding applause I proposed the name Secret Sadists for t~is. April 1 is a Monday this tJear (how appropriate!) so the way it l1Iill usork is thi-s: the previous meeting l1Ie usill choose names. Starting on Monday !lie l1Iill begin pla~ing tricks, continuing until the SWIL April Fools' party that Friday, at which identities will be revealed. Julie is organizing the party. The: tricks sould be "vicious but creative". Other notes: February 9 and 10 there will be a Creation Con at the Philadelphia Centre Hotel. Creations are comic- and media-oriented cons, heavy on Dr. Who and Star Trek. Some stars usill be there. Jed put a TltJer on it on the SWILboard, ,but it has vanist\ed. Will there be a pilgrimage sometime soon? Whence? "RocktJ Horror" 'was suggested, and Jack volunteered to arrange getting the S.-C. van for us if we decide to go. Please usrite/draw/scrawl things Tor BEM! A diplomacy game is beginning. Since Perry didn't \IIa:nt to be mentioned in SWILneuss, contact Eric Knapp for info. (Oop-s. Sorr~, Perry. ) May Arioch ignore you, the Weyrleaders
