A SWILNEWS AT SPRINGTIME (4/12/91) Samuel R. Delany has come and gone. He spoke here last weekend to small but generally receptive audience. The copy of _The Motion of Light in Water_ that was purchased for Birdwaner was signed and will be put in Birdwaner soon if it hasn't already. He also gave us a signed copy of the British edition, which contains an extra 150 pages. We're not exactly sure what we should do with that version since that is something that should be treated with extreme care. Suggestions welcomed. Many thanks to Jed Hartman for doing a whole lot of work on getting the weekend together. Budget Committee, showing taste, wisdom, and overall common sense (consider the obvious sarcastic comment made) has approved the SWIL budget for next year. However film society had their budget cut. So they're looking for groups to co-sponsor films. Thus we should decide fairly soon what we're going to do with the speakers and movies budget for next year and see if we have the money to co-sponsor something. But first we need to decide what we're going to do with the rest of our movies budget for this year. We have to pick films for the infamous Schlock Film Fest! (Aiii! Not the Schlock Film Fest! This is the management. We apologize for the inconvenience. We should be returning to normalcy soon, assuming you want it returned.) Therefore assuming we can con the key out of Security in order to get the film catalogs we will be picking movies this Saturday. Come prepared to vote for your favorite worst movies of all time! Also this weekend is Parents Weekend. As always, we'll be playing Live Chess. Given the record established over the past few years it will probably be played in Parrish Commons. But on the slim chance that it is not raining, snowing, or depositing small furry creatures on our heads (well, there's a first time for everything you know?) we will be playing out on Parrish lawn. Tell your friends, drag your parents along, and sign up to play with Josh Smith. Next weekend there's lots of neat things going on both on and off campus but none of them are SWIL related so I won't mention them. But the weekend after is the spring Pterodactyl Hunt. We still need lots of people to sign up and be monsters. Talk to Stephen Sample to join the fun. Back on the subject of money (sheesh I sound like an econ major here) we still have our refreshments budget left over. It wouldn't do to let that go to waste so we're going to throw a post- Walpurgesnacht story reading the first weekend in May. Which evening has yet to be decided, but will be soon. Finally, the T-Shirt order has gone off to the printer. If you ordered one, they will cost $6.86, and you can pay Nao for it. If you want to round it up to $7, any extra money will go into the SWIL endowment for the writing contest, which hopefully will have a little better luck next year. (Get writing now and submit to BEM if Fran is still taking submissions.) They should be ready by the end of April at the latest. No review this week in an attempt to keep this to one page.
