THE LAST SWILNEWS OF THE YEAR - 5/9/91 Schedules? Who needs schedules? Despite several last minute reschedulings, we finished off our yearly events in fine style. The Post Walpurgesnacht story reading wound up being moved to this past Friday (apologies to anyone who wanted to attend but didn't find out in time) and was a success. If you're interested in attending somewhat regular story readings, talk to Nao Parkhurst who is trying to organize some. Also the Schlock Film Festival suffered somewhat from running into conflicting events. However some of the worst Hollywood has to offer was shown earlier this week. If you missed it, we'll do it again next year. BEM is currently at the printers, and we should be seeing the finished product real soon now. What has arrived is this years t-shirts. If you ordered one but have not received yours, talk to Nao. This Saturday will be the last regular SWIL meeting of the year. This is the week that the meeting has been moved across the center area to room 5. It will be the last meeting as students for the class of 1991 as well. The next time they come to a meeting it will be as dinosaurs. They will be missed, but they will also have a chance to come back real soon. We have already reserved Bond on October 18th and 19th (the first weekend of October Break) for SWIL the 13th: Reunion Part II. For those not graduating it will be a chance to meet lots of alumni you've heard about. Review: A Fire in the Sun by George Alec Effinger- I would say that this is more of a cyberpunk influenced novel as opposed to a cyberpunk novel. The fancy computer equipment so dominant in the works of Gibson and Sterling is present, but it doesn't dominate the story, instead forming part of the setting. The background that Effinger develops is that of a 22nd century Muslim city and it is well done and eminently believably. The characters populating the novel are strong and generally realistic. But the plot is somewhat thin, not particularly memorable. Overall it's an enjoyable read, well written, but not a classic.
