Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1992 15:19:04 -0500 Subject: LeapNews...boing, boing, boi-THUD First of all, there will be no meeting on Saturday. Or the Saturday after. So don't go to Sharples. They won't let you in. The discussion table has been tabled. The tabling of the discussion table will be discussed at the SWIL table after break. But Andrea's sick of being the only one going. And so's the discussion table. Especially because Andrea keeps being sick on it. [Bleah. --B] Under consideration is the proposal to spend some of our acquisitions budget on getting an SF magazine, preferably one of the smaller ones available only through subscription. This would be nice for several reasons: 1) if we don't spend our money, BC will think we don't need it and will take it away, and 2) we're out of shelf space in Birdwainer anyway. [And 3) the bigger ones don't fit in the mailboxes. --B] [How many SF magazines can dance on the head of a pin? --D] So if you have suggestions, talk to Nao or Stephen. Jeff has copies of some if you want to browse. Drop in on Jeff at any hour, day or night. Speculative fiction is his first priority. ML4220. x8016. T-shirt designs are due to Nao after break. Not just _after_ break, but SOON after break. Like the next Saturday. B(r)ad's "SWIL going" idea is being drawn (and quartered) by Stephen, but other suggestions are welcome. Please. [Ha ha, cruel cruel. --B] Speaking of please, BEM submissions are due 4 April. Write, draw, participate in some way. Also, if you want to be staff, be prepared to volunteer. Practice raising your hands over break. (This will come in handy (ba-dum-crash) for Live Chess, for which there will be sign-ups for also after break. For. [Towards. --B] Judith "Little Miss" Moffett will be here at 7:30 on April 2nd (or shortly therearound). Reading (indeed, finding) her book(s) over break would be a good idea. [Plus, if they're on the top shelf, you can get some hand-raising practice in. --D] Next year, we might could bring Bruce Stirling. Andrea is in charge of speakers for next year, assuming Jeff graduates, [Ouch! --B] [placating grin --D]. If you can think of anybody you'd like to have come here, think about writing a Cooper Foundation proposal. Worked for Delaney. If you want massacree pix, talk to Gloria [who will be in Excelsis Deo until further notice. --B]. They're developed now. [No, you're not going to put "so's Gloria" or anything like that. --D] Random news: Daver is apparently Jere7my's mother. And there has been a suggestion to put an umlaut over the W in SWIL. [More bleah. Reminds me of those German classes. --B] [All three of them... --D] And, Josh Smith and Jeff will be driving to "Alienses" on Memorial Day. FIRST DR. WHO RUMOR OF THE 1992 SEASON! Jeff says that They have unearthed new Dr. Who episodes (featuring the second Doctor, "the round dark guy who looks like Moe"). For those who like fish and police, have we got a show for you. It's called "Fish Police," and it's about fish, some of whom are police, and it's on at 8:30 Friday nights. Basically, we have a parody of hard-boiled detective TV shows, crossed with Wet Dream. [Ask if you need to. :)= --B] [Ask HIM. >;) --D] It, I [B] thought, was funny and raunchy, and it had Tim Curry's and Ed Asner's voices, so what could be better? The lines were good [Ha ha, get it? Lines. --B], even if they might run out of puns sometime soon. It's based on the comic by somebody. I [D] liked it too, although I'm worried about the amount of marine life humor that can be extracted from all this. So far, so good, but it's only been half an hour. Jeff will be taping the episodes, so while you're there flipping through his SF magazines, you could always catch up. ML4220. x8016. REVIEW BY JEFF HILDEBRAND, ML4220, x8016, seeks single flightless...Never mind. _Lunar Descent_ by Allen Steele. Steele is supposedly one of the bright lights of SF who will carry on the tradition of Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke and such authors. If that's true, the tradition is in trouble. There are many times reading this book when you feel like it's current day and not in the future; things really haven't changed. Furthermore, despite throwing around technological terms quite impressively, Steele makes some really horrible mistakes in his science (and he seems to have learned about computers from William Gibson novels). In the end the novel comes down to: these are the good guys and their going to win; these are the bad guys and nasty things are going to happen to them. By that point, I didn't really care that much.
