Date: Thu, 26 Mar 92 15:00:49 -0500 Subject: The Mostly Not Written By Us SWILnews Hey folks. You got to vote last week. You'll get to vote next week too. And if that doesn't satisfy you, heck, it's an election year.... Yes, last week we picked a T-Shirt. The SWIL 1992 drawing and slogan de l'annee will be [drumroll] "SWIL Going" Version 1 - the Energizer Troll, by b(R)ad. Nao is in charge of ordering and things - she says there'll be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside the mailroom. So sign up and buy one. Buy two. Buy mine. They'll be about $7. Extra change will, I assume, go to the endowment. [We really should have that contest sometime - D] Yes, next week we'll vote on schlock. Vote early, vote often, vote for "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death." Also next week, sign up for Live Chess some more. Parents' Weekend is Real Soon Now (tm), so talk to Josh Smith and be a pawn in the game of, well, chess. Also also Real Soon Now is BEM! Submit thereto! We're not kidding! Please! Stories, poems, art; tell your non-SWIL friends because publicity is lacking (cough). If you want to be on the editorial board, talk to me, Be- sorry, Discipline. And now, a word from the tall one and his mate. ____________________________________________________________________________ __ We, the Cocurators of the Cordwainer Bird Science Fiction Library, being of unsound minds, have drastically changed the format of the library: 1. To reduce volume and allow acquisition of new, quality books, we have ruthlessly removed all but one of each book that had multiple copies. Such duplicates have been eaten by George, in Hallowell Basement. Also removed were books that were damaged severely. 2. Anthologies of short stories by more than one author (including "shared world" anthologies) have been shelved at the very end. Thus books are divided by the following criteria: first, hardbacks and large paperbacks vs. regular paperbacks. Second (within each of those categories), regular books vs. Star Trek books vs. anthologies. Hardback anthologies are currently on the windowsill. 3. Magazines are still filed in the same place, on top of the shelf. We are planning to start subscribing again to a speculative fiction magazine. Please contact one of the Procreators (!) if you have a preference. 4. Books added to the shelves so far this semester, either replacements for missing ones or books that are entirely new to Birdwainer (some of these are donations, hint, hint -Nao. If you have utter drek you can just keep it ;;>-Roo): The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkein; _The King of Elfland's Daughter_, by Lord Dunsany; E.R.Eddison's _The Worm Ourobouros_, _Mistress of Mistresses_, _A Fish Dinner in Memison_, and _The Mezentian Gate; _An Alien Heat_ by Michael Moorcock; _Nebula Awards 23_ & _24_, edited by Michael Bishop (these are anthologies, seemingly); _More Soviet Science Fiction_ ed. by Asimov; a whole shelf full of Piers Anthony's books (NOT); Eugene Zamiatin's _We_ (donated by Jimmosk, I think - Nao); _The Difference Engine_, by William Gibson & Bruce Sterling (donated by Charles (Danforth?)); _Neuromancer_ by William Gibson (Donated by ME-Nao); _Winter's Tale_, by Mark Helprin; _The Best of Cordwainer Smith_ (Jimmosk donated?); Robert Asprin's _M.Y.T.H. Inc. in Action_; _City of a Thousand Suns_ by Samuel R. Delany; _The_Grey_Horse_ by R.A. MacAvoy; Ursula K. LeGuin's _The Left Hand of Darkness and (I *think* this got added-Nao) _The Word for World is Forest_; Patricia C. Wrede's _Shadow Magic_ donated by Fran Poodry. 5. We will be putting together a list of past Nebula/Hugo award-winning books that Birdwainer doesn't have, with a view towards getting them. If there is a book you would like to see owned by the Corwainer Bird Science Fiction Library, you can either donate it or tell us about it. 6. All you graduating seniors, don't fergit to see if you have any Birdwainer books so you can return them before you leave. In about a month, we'll be sending out lists of what you all still have, according to the cards in the box. Thank you....... 7. As always, questions, comments, and large sums of money in small, unmarked bills may be directed to the Cocurators. ____________________________________________________________________________ __ And don't forget about Judith Moffatt. Her parents did, and boy was she unhappy about it. Took her weeks to get home. [My dad left me in a store once.... ONCE. -D] [Well, so did Jesus'. -B] REVIEW BY JEFF HILDEBRAND (ML4220, x8016) _Only Begotten Daughter_ by James Morrow. What happens if God's daughter is born to a virgin father in modern day New Jersey? This is the basic premise Morrow begins with and then he uses it to explore our modern world. Along the way there are some screamingly funny lines (many caused by the ability to work miracles in unusual circumstances) and some rather poignant scenes. It's a wonderful, thoughtful book that's sure to wind up on some group's list of banned books, so read it now.
