Just thought I'd drop you a line and keep you up-to-date on current events in the SWILiverse. Any day now, there will be purchasing of new books for Birdwainer. We've got $80 of book budget just mouldering in a vault somewhere, and the big-time SF awards have just come out. This means it is time to go into a shopping frenzy. I guess, to save Stephen and/or Nao the time and trouble, we will organize a posse to troop down to Borders and Waldenbooks (once Greg Frost's book has been located) and buy out the joints. I think it'd probably be better if we limited it to people who are in the habit of reading SF (of any sort) often...more details at the meeting. Schlock films have been chosen! In the DuPont lecture hall, the following pieces of cinematographical filth will be shown on the following dates: MONDAY MAY 3: The Brain Eaters (with Leonard Nimoy, circa 1958) TUESDAY MAY 4: Billy the Kid vs. Dracula (Kid: "Showdown at high noon!" Drac: "Can't be high noon--I'm a vampire.") WEDNESDAY MAY 5: Frogs (amphibians attack a small island resort! Ack!) The Brain Eaters is actually on the way; the other two will be sent tomorrow (they are, in fact, available. Big surprise.) Jim has sent a letter to Teddddddddddddddddddddd (enough d's, Jeddd?) regarding the future home of George (i.e., hopefully, Bond top floor). Apart from the use of the phrase "way cool" in the letter, it seemed fine and dandy. Response time unknown, but we will let you know ASAP. (Speaking of Jed Hartman, he is (so I hear) lurking about Swarthmore somewhere, so if you missed Dinosaur Weekend last weekend, here's your chance to hunt one down!) Live Chess came together nicely, despite the lack of a mini-chess board (my fault! --O), with a largish turnout of both pieces and spectators. (I think we only had eight shoe-pawns!) The new format (contest chess) was more fun for the spectators (albeit confusing) (as are these parentheses), although there were some complaints that it detracted too much from the whole chess concept. At any rate, it was fun for all. (I still can't believe Brad can spit farther than I can, though... --O) Finally, everyone prepare for the Great Annual Walpurgisnacht Story Reading! Tasty Walpurgisnacks and stories by the dozen, April 30th in Hallowell basement. (This will be the last story reading there, guys! Come and say goodbye to the place that has spawned so many SWIL traditions and memories... All together now! "We'll...meet again...don't know where...don't know WHEN....." WHACK, thud.) Btw, there are still many many unpaid-for T-shirts that Nao needs to pick up! And to do that, she needs OUR MONEY! Get $7.50 to her Real Soon if you ordered a T-shirt. This is no joke! The year will be over soon! And P.S... SWIL once again has captured Banana house for the forces of weirdness this summer... tradition is upheld. Hoorah. And now.....
