Date: Sat, 15 May 93 14:35:42 -0400 To: _swat.org.swil @ math.wisc.edu From: jthorpe1 @ cc.swarthmore.edu Subject: Includes THREE, count 'em, THREE attendance lists Hey, everybody. This here thing is the last SWILnews you'll be receiving for a while, due to the fact that the college is closing down for the summer. We apologize for its tardiness, but exams tend to distract one from the more important orders of business. At any rate... George has found a temporary home in Tarble, where he will stay until the coming Fall. Unfortunately, George has no method of independent locomotion, so he will need the help of my mom's car (thanks, ma) and a whole mess of SWILfolk (thanks, SWILfolk). A number of you have volunteered (you know who you are!), but others are (of course) welcome. This will all be happening round about 3:00PM on Sunday (whenever my mom's car gets here), and shouldn't take more than an hour. Come, join in the fun! Carry ancient typewriters! Boxes of newspaper swords! Books and books and books! The best part is, it's all absolutely FREE! Thanks... BEM has been postponed this year, due to lack of submissions, and will probably be released next winter or so. In the meantime, write, write, write! (Or draw, draw, draw!) You've got a whole summer, after all... Books have been bought for Cordwainer Bird, as we all know. They currently are sitting in my room, but will be catalogued and shelved over the summer... (once I've read them all and spilled chocolate syrup on them...bwa ha ha ha hah!) The Walpurgisnacht story reading was, if not a huge success, certainly enjoyable. Approximately 15 of us stalwart SWILfolk gathered in fu-fu-fu-Hallowell basement (soon to be dorm rooms, heh), to hear tales of Kafka, Dave Barry, Kafka, Generation X, Kafka, James Thurber, Kafka, and Kafka, plus many more, including Kafka! (Sorry, David... :)= ) Plus, the snacks were encouragingly tasty, especially the slew of Mallomars. Yum. By the way, we need a NEW TREASURER for next year, as Jim has decided he doesn't have the time or the inclination. There's no hurry, but keep it in mind this summer... YOU could have power over nearly everything SWIL does... Sam Weiler, as has been noted, has volunteered to be Live Chess Organizer (or LCO, as I like to call it) for post-zeroth-meeting next year. Ah, the fun, the frolic, of cavorting amongst squares o' tape and brutally murdering opposing pieces. Tra la la lala... There will be a stuffing of freshling mailboxes, as usual, by Aaron and myself, at about that time...suggestions for changes of the current "brochure" are welcome(ish). Keep an eye out for the miniseries "Wild Palms"--it is, despite its name, a science fiction show. PREMISE: In the near future, some people somewhere are doing something bad with virtual reality. (Granted, I know diddly about the show, but it's got James Belushi and is directed by Oliver Stone...) Check it out. I _think_ it starts Sunday, but what do I know? Also to watch for: Jurassic Park (the movie) sometime this summer--directed by Stephen Spielberg. I've seen no reviews, so know not whether it will be any good. And now we come to the end of our news for this year of 1992-93. Plans are already afoot to bring Mike Jittlov to speak next year; thoughts about the Pterodactyl Hunt of next fall should be forming in your heads like sugar plums; apart from that, have fair-to-good summers all, and we'll be back in September. And remember: the farce will be with you. Always.
